PROJECT NAME:

The Veterans History Project
Narrative: The Veterans History Project is a national project to honor America's wartime veterans by gathering, preserving, and making available their first-hand accounts of wartime experiences at the nation's library in Washington, DC. These oral histories and documents tell the story of wartime from the point of view of ordinary people. Scope: WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, current conflicts; all branches of service; all ranks; men and women. Also desired: letters, diaries, memoirs, and photos that elucidate a veteran's story. Project staff work with volunteers -- individuals and organizations, from high schools to retirement communities, and especially relatives of veterans -- to support their efforts to contact veterans, conduct interviews with them per Veterans History Project guidelines (www.loc.gov/vets), and donate the audio- or videorecording, and other documentary materials, to the Library of Congress for cataloging, preservation, and use by researchers. The collection as of this writing is 24,000 collections. Over 1000 collections are fully digitized. All are available through quarterly online exhibits and a searchable database at the web address above. Researchers can arrange to study materials at the Library.
