Oral History from ABC to CD-R
Friday, March 28, 2003

This comprehensive workshop day will give participants a thorough introduction to oral history, as well as a behind-the-scenes tour of one of the finest performing arts libraries in the world.

9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon Morning Workshop: Preregistration Required
Led by Elly Shodell, Oral History Director of the Port Washington Public Library and Susan Kraft, Coordinator of the Dance Oral History Project for the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, this session will focus on oral history basics. From selecting informants to developing questions to transcribing your tape, you will learn how to collect oral histories that are useful and exciting, whether in the context of academic research, library, museum or archive development, teaching, or as a means to collect family history. The workshop leaders will offer individual advice, work samples, guidelines and suggestions for further reading. At 11:30, participants will have the opportunity to tour the newly renovated research divisions of the Performing Arts Library.

1:30 – 4:30 p.m. Afternoon Workshop: Preregistration Required
Adrian Cosentini, (audio engineer of Vidipax, a media restoration company), assisted by Daniel Sbardella (audio engineer for the Rodgers and Hammerstein Archive of Recorded Sound), will take participants step-by-step through the process of taping and preserving oral history interviews. Workshop leaders will discuss recording environment, techniques and equipment, as well as analog and digital storage and preservation options. The workshop will include hands- on experience both in the recording and preserving of oral history and culminate in a tour of the library's sound preservation studio and oral history recording room. While the workshop is intended for those new to the field, those with more experience will have the opportunity to learn about the most recent developments in audio recording and preservation. There will be ample time for questions and answers.
